Colleges flock to Destrehan to meet with teens

Provide one-on-one time with recruiters

St. Charles teens will have the chance to meet with college, technical school and military recruiters from across the country at the district’s annual Future Prep Night on Oct. 5.

“This is to plan for your future – we try to accommodate for all options for post secondary education,” said Margaret Chauvin, counselor at Destrehan High who helped organize the event. “We know now all students are going to college, they don’t all need to go, but they all should continue their education beyond high school in some way.”

The event will feature representatives from most of the state’s two- and four-year colleges, Aveda Beauty College, River Parishes Technical College, ITT, and every branch of the military. There will also be some out-of-state schools present, including the University of Southern Mississippi, Millsaps College and the University of Notre Dame.

The fair-type arrangement will allow students to get one-on-one time with recruiters and ask individual questions.
“It should be very helpful,” Chauvin said.

About 200 to 300 students show up to the event each year, but Chauvin said that there should be over 1,000 if all juniors and seniors showed up. She also said that parents are encouraged to attend with their children.

The guidance departments of Destrehan and Hahnville high schools plan the event each year to help students prepare for their future educational plans and careers.

In addition to gathering information on their future education and career paths, students can speak with representatives from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance for information on financial aid, including the TOPS scholarship.

The event will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. at Destrehan High School.
