Charges dropped against man accused of shooting cat with arrow

Max the black cat’s luck was pretty good last year when he survived being shot with a bow and arrow, but the Luling man accused of doing it won’t be prosecuted for animal cruelty. Cody M. Dupre, a neighbor to cat owner Dolly Dicken in Mimosa Park subdivision, also in Luling, turned himself in to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in connection with the shooting.

Dupre was charged with a felony count of cruelty to animals, which was recently dropped, according to court records.

Dicken, however was issued a citation under the parish’s leash law for allowing the cat to run freely in the area. She said she would seek restitution from Dupre.

In June of last year, Dicken recounted the cat returning home with an arrow extending from his chest. She called 911, reported the shooting of the then 9-month old feline and rushed him to a LaPlace veterinarian where it was determined the arrow missed his heart – barely – as well as other major organs.

Friends helped cover Max’s vet bill through a Gofundme account and shared the story online. Dicken praised the Sheriff’s Office response along with Sheriff Greg Champagne who announced that animal cruelty would not be tolerated in St. Charles Parish.
