On Saturday Destrehan High School football players will be holding a car wash fundraiser to benefit Take Paws Rescue from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Destrehan Animal Hospital.
The cost is $10 per car. There will also be bowls of jambalaya sold for $5 and raffles. There will also be dogs available for adoption on hand. Drinks will be available via Fizz Station of Destrehan, which will also be at the event.
Destrehan resident and animal hospital volunteer Vicki Cain said the event came to be after a foster dog, Will, was injured after biting a shrimp attached to a fishing hook. The hook became lodged in the lab mix’s mouth and he was rushed to the emergency vet to have it removed.
The operation was a success and Will is just fine, but Dominick Townsend of DHS – whose family is fostering Will – and his teammates have organized the fundraiser to offset Will’s medical costs and Take Paws in the accident’s aftermath. Will is being fostered for Take Paws Rescue; he was on the euthanasia list at a shelter in Acadia Parish and saved by that decision to adopt him.
“It’s to support animal rescue. They’re solely run on donations, and unexpected medical bills for these rescue dogs can really set them back. So, anything people can do to help is very appreciated and very helpful,” Cain said. “There’s a lot that goes into it and it’s all much more than what the adoption fee really covers on its own.”
The pup of the hour, Will, is also going to be at the car wash.
“I think it’s a great thing that these students came up with to take a tough situation and make something positive from it,” Cain said.
Take Paws Rescue is a volunteer, foster-based, non-profit rescue group based out of New Orleans. It provides foster-care, vetting, and adoption services to homeless dogs by partnering with open-admission shelters in need of rescue help, and assisting dog owners in the community with direct owner surrenders.
