Car Care column to debut in Herald-Guide

Knowledge is power and especially so to Galen Guidry, who says it can translate into horsepower, too.

With more 38 years of experience, Guidry is sharing his extensive experience in vehicle maintenance in his new column, “Car Care,” debuting in next week’s issue of the Herald-Guide on its Editorial page.

“I’m attempting to improve the image of the automotive industry,” said Guidry, who owns and operates Today’s Car Care in Boutte. “I hope I can start with this column.”Guidry is passionate about what he does for a living. It’s not a job to him and he welcomes the opportunity to share what he knows to help others.

“Every customer I speak to asks about preventive maintenance,” he said. “Most people own or drive vehicles daily and depend on them to deliver them to work, play or emergencies” he said.

Guidry grew up in the business.

“I literally grew up a mechanic,” he said of growing up in his father’s repair shop. He later started his own tire and service center, as well as hired a master technician to step up his service. Some 18 years ago, owners Kerwin and Galen Caillet hired him to work at Today’s Car Care in Boutte, where he worked 18 years until he bought the business and became its owner. Today, Guidry is an A.S.E. master certified technician.

Guidry has since grown the business by 25 percent. At the core of his operation is his business philosophy: “We provide honest and knowledgeable service.”

“I truly believe the one thing that distinguishes our repair shop from most is that I personally train all of my techs,” he said. “I am also involved with my techs in continuing computer training classes.”

Guidry also says they keep a busy work day that typically begins at 6:30 a.m. and works only on week days so he can stay involved in daily operations and ensure quality work.

“I also believe that success is more than money,” he said of promoting a healthy work atmosphere. “A quality family life is much more important to me and my employees. I coached my kids for 12 years and enjoyed every moment. I suspect others would love doing the same. Having evenings and weekends to spend with your family is priceless to most people.”

But Guidry also considers those who do business with him as an extended family, which is why he strives to help them do well, too.
