Police are searching for a man who attempted to break into a St. Rose home and could also be involved in a Destrehan home invasion that took place the week before.
During that Destrehan attack, which occurred in the 100 Block of Villere Drive on Dec. 4, a couple was robbed at gunpoint by a masked man who broke into their home at night and stole cash and a cell phone. The robber grabbed the woman and tried to take her with him, however, his plan was thwarted when the woman pushed him out the door and locked it.
Last Thursday, burglars tried to break into a home in the 200 block of Oak Street in St. Rose at 10:48 p.m. They kicked in a door that led to a storage room, but furniture blocked the way.
The noise startled the homeowners, who called the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office before searching the area. They were unable to find any sign of the suspects.
The home had multiple cameras recording the outside of the residence and the Sheriff’s Office quickly arrested Rodric Shorts, 27, of New Sarpy. They believe that Shorts, who was charged with principle to attempted burglary, served as the getaway driver. Another suspect seen on the surveillance footage escaped, but the Sheriff’s Office released a picture of the man with the hope that someone would recognize him.
Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office, said the Destrehan home invasion and the attempted burglary in St. Rose could be connected because of the unusual nature of the crimes.
“It’s very uncommon that we have these brazen robberies,” he said. “They occurred so close together that it gives us a reason to look into whether they are connected.”
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on these crimes to contact them at either (985)783-1135 or (985)783-6807. Callers can also contact Crime Stoppers at (877)903-7867.
