Dogs had scarring, puncture wounds
A New Sarpy man was arrested after police responding to a drug call discovered 17 starved pit bull terriers in his home, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office, said police received a call about suspected drug activity at 837 E. Lawson St. on Nov. 22. When deputies arrived, they spoke to the home’s owner, Kevin Adams, and saw drugs inside the residence, Yoes said.
Police received consent to search the house and say they found cocaine, marijuana and a large number of pit bull terriers, almost half of which were puppies. Yoes said the dogs were extremely malnourished.
The pit bull terriers were seized by the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter. Angie Robert, animal control director, said they were in bad shape and the shelter was only able to save three puppies.
“The guy said he was feeding them but they were pretty thin. The youngest puppies were full of hook worms and the dogs were living in their own feces,” Robert said. “There is a saying that there are some things worse than death.”
Robert said that all of the dogs had old scarring and most had puncture wounds.
“I can’t say they were fighting them, but at some point these dogs were fighting amongst themselves or with other dogs,” she said. “We don’t know what they’ve been through because we don’t have any history.”
The shelter will attempt to save the three puppies, who will need socialization skills, Robert said.
“We like to give the ones we can a chance,” she said.Adams was charged with 17 counts of cruelty to animals, 17 counts of not having the pit bulls registered, 12 counts of not having the required rabies vaccine and six counts of not having breeder registration.
He was also charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine.
Adams is being held at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona under a combined bond of $167,500 for all charges.
