West Nile virus found in Destrehan mosquito sample

A mosquito sample from Destrehan tested positive for the West Nile virus and parish residents are urged to protect themselves against bites by wearing light-colored clothing and long sleeves and pants.

Last summer, mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were found in Willowdale, Red Church, Norco and Montz. Mosquitoes that test positive for the virus can potentially spread encephalitis, a viral infection that causes flu-like symptoms and can be life threatening.

Along with wearing specific clothing to avoid mosquito bites, residents should also avoid being outside during dawn and dusk hours. Topical mosquito repellents containing DEET, which is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents, are also effective, according to mosquito control.
