Summer reading program is family tradition

Pamela Owens’ mom and dad did it, she did it and now her three-year-old is doing it – participating in the St. Charles Parish Library’s yearly Summer Reading Program.“We did it with my mom and dad when we were kids, and it was important to me to continue this with my son,” said the Luling resident, who likes to learn about what interests her child.

And, right now, it’s robots.

“We’re reading about robots – all kinds of robots,” Owens said. “Seeing the excitement in his face is neat.”

It’s the same enthusiasm Owens experienced as a child with the Summer Reading Program, which has become a kind of tradition for her family. Her husband talked about how it was so important to his family, too, so it was important to continue introducing the importance of reading with Evan.

It’s working.

At age 3, Evan is already determined to pick out his own books, as well as checking them out on his own.

“He’s very methodical on all those points,” Owens said.

The library is also appealing with its variety of activities, which Marie Tizzard of Destrehan agreed makes her a solid library advocate.

Tizzard follows library events, from crafts at the Norco branch to the cookbook club at the Paradis branch.

“It’s important to me for several reasons,” she said. “I have nieces and nephews from age 2 to 40 and they all participated in the summer activities. Now, there are adult activities.”

And she’s enjoyed them since moving to the parish in 2002.

Tizzard considers the library a great place to stay busy and socialize, which she does in two cookbook clubs.

This year’s Summer Reading Program, supported by a $42,171 grant from Entergy Waterford 3, will be held May 23 through July 31.

The program will feature healthy living along with numerous events and activities throughout the summer for residents of all ages.

“This grant received from Entergy Waterford 3 will have a huge impact on our Summer Reading Program,” said Library Director Leann Benedict. “It will allow us to provide a wide range of fine arts performances, opportunities for technological skills building, ways to achieve better health and well-being for members of our community—all while encouraging people of all ages to incorporate reading and learning into their lives.”

The program will begin with a kickoff party at the East Regional Library, 160 W. Campus Dr. in Destrehan, Monday  (May 23) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will feature a Pop Up Hula Hoop Jam presented by Jenette Ginsberg from Hey Now Hooping and participants will receive snoballs.

On Tuesday (May 24), the St. Rose Branch (90 East Club Dr.) will host a summer reading fun day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Norco Branch, 197 Good Hope St., will begin the summer Wednesday, (May 25) and the Hahnville Branch, 14996 River Road, will host a kickoff party Thursday (May 26). Drop into both locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for summer fun.

Visit the Paradis Branch (307 Audubon St.) Friday (May 27) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for outdoor and indoor games. All St. Charles Parish Library events are free and open to the public.
