St. Charles Parish high school students are gearing up for ACT testing in the hopes of getting top scores to secure free college money from the state’s scholastic and scholarship programs.
A series of two ACT Prep sessions will be held Sept. 30 and Oct. 7th from 2 to 5 pm at Destrehan High School. The sessions will provide an overview of the ACT, practice tests, and test taking strategies to assist students in taking the ACT. The cost is $10 per student for both sessions. Materials and refreshments will be provided for the participants.
To receive the most benefit from the Prep sessions, students need to attend both sessions. The sessions will be held at Destrehan High’s Technology Building.
Tips for Taking the ACT from the national website for the test at www.ACT.com
– Carefully read the instructions on the cover of the test booklet.
– Read the directions for each test carefully.
– Read each question carefully.
– Pace yourself-don’t spend too much time on a single passage or question.
– Pay attention to the announcement of five minutes remaining on each test.
– Use a soft lead No. 2 pencil with a good eraser; do not use a mechanical pencil, ink pen or correction fluid.
– Answer the easy questions first, then go back and answer the more difficult ones.
– On difficult questions, eliminate as many incorrect answers as you can, then make an educated guess among those remaining.
– Answer every question. Your scores on the multiple-choice tests are based on the number of questions you answer correctly. There is no penalty for guessing.
– Review your work. If you finish a test before time is called, go back and check your work.
– Mark your answers neatly. Erase any mark completely and cleanly without smudging.
– Do not mark or alter any ovals on a test or continue writing the essay after time has been called or you will be dismissed and your answer document will not be scored.

The ACT is a test given to high school juniors who plan to attend college, in order to test their knowledge base.
Students can make arrangements to take the test through school guidance office, and for a fee,” It’s given several times a year, all over the nation. Scores on the ACT test range from 1 to 36, and can have a huge impact on whether or not you’re admitted to the college of choice. In addition to an optional essay portion, there are four sections of the ACT exam: math, English, reading, and science.
It’s a timed test, and there are 215 questions on the ACT Test, usually getting more difficult as you progress through each section. It’s best to not spend too much time on difficult questions, but answer all the ones you’re sure of first, and then go back and attempt the harder ones again. Students are not penalized for wrong answers, so if you’re completely baffled, it’s fine to guess. Test results are usually received four to seven weeks after taking the test. Students may view them online before that, by paying a small fee, but your college won’t get your scores any sooner.
