It is back to school time in St. Charles Parish and this year the school board is continuing to tighten up on their policies.
Both boys and girls are required to wear a collared white or designated school color shirt, accompanied by solid navy or khaki pants or shorts with no trim, adornments or distracting logos.
All pants with belt loops must be worn with a belt, and girls are permitted to wear skirts or skort. However, these, in addition to shorts, must be no shorter than two inches above the kneecap.
Cargo pants are no longer considered an acceptable part of the school uniform because of the extra pockets that can be used to hide or store items that are prohibited on schools grounds.
Students from around the parish seem to have mixed opinions on whether or not they think the dress code is a good idea.
Starr Lewis, a seventh grader at J.B. Martin Middle School, says that she thinks it would be easier to wear her regular clothes to school because it is sometimes hard to find clothes that meet all the policy requirements.
On the other hand, 11-year-old Brittany Watson, a fifth grader a R.J. Vial Elementary School, said that she doesn’t mind wearing the uniforms.
In addition to the above mentioned dress code regulations, area schools will still enforce previous standards such as no sunglasses or any clothing that is too revealing or oversized, and all shoes must have soles and restraints to protect the entire foot.
The policy states that exceptions concerning dress will be made for special events such as spirit days or field trips, and transfer students will be given ten school days to obtain a proper uniform.
There are several local vendors that sell school uniforms on both the east and west banks of the parish.
On the east bank, school uniforms can be purchased at vendors such as Foxy Lady and the Shop Around the Corner, and on the west bank merchants such as Wal-Mart and A-1 Signs and Uniforms carry the standard required uniform.
The school board states that in most case the uniforms are less expensive than typical clothing, however, there are programs available to families who cannot afford purchasing the uniforms.
Parents who cannot purchase standard uniforms should complete a Uniform Policy Application and submit it to the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance.
This request must be made within five school days from the start of school or from the initial date of enrollment.

Editor’s note: The uniform policy for St. Charles Parish Public Schools has not been changed. The rules and regulations from last school year remain the same in regards to school uniforms. The district is tightening up on uniforms in an effort to eleminate uniform violations. Please be advised that if you have purchased uniforms that were in regulation to last year’s uniform policies there is no need to re-purchase or change in any way.
