The St. Charles Parish Library is partnering with the American Red Cross in September to host three sessions of the Pillowcase Project, an interactive emergency preparedness program designed for children ages 8 to 11.
Each child will decorate and personalize a pillowcase that can then be used as an emergency supply kit to pack their own supplies and valuables in case of an evacuation. All materials will be provided.
The Pillowcase Project date and times:
Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. – St. Rose Branch, 90 East Club Dr.
Monday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. – Paradis Branch, 307 Audubon St.
Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. – West Regional Library, 105 Lakewood Dr. in Luling
The Pillowcase Project’s purpose is to help create a generation of children who understand the science behind emergency preparedness and are empowered to take action preparing for emergencies.
They will also be encouraged to help create a prepared community by sharing what they learn with family and friends.
The Norco Branch of the St. Charles Parish Library hosted the first session of the Pillowcase Project on Aug. 4.
“All of the kids really enjoyed decorating their pillowcases,” said Mary Berg, library staff member. “They drew pictures on the pillowcases of things they would like to pack in case of a hurricane. There was a lot of positive feedback from them and their parents.”
All St. Charles Parish Library events are open to the public and free of charge.
