Sheriff’s camp looking for a few good kids

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office has openings for its Operation First Class Sheriff’s Camp for boys ages 12 through 16. The camp, which features activities like archery, rifle range shooting, gun safety, swimming, team building and leadership building, is scheduled for July 6 through July 11.

The weeklong overnight camp is free for all chosen participants.

Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, says the Sheriff’s Camp, which is located at Camp Salmon in Mississippi this year, is designed to promote trust and interaction between young men and sheriff’s departments throughout the southeast portion of the state.

“Through a partnership with local sheriffs of southeast Louisiana and the New Orleans Council Boy Scouts of America, we offer boys an opportunity to attend, at no charge, a one week summer camp.” Yoes said. “The camp will blend outdoor experience, education and instructional skills, career education, building values, ethics and leadership development to combat the causes of violence and crime.”

Given the past success, the sheriff has announced that 50 slots are available for this year’s camp.
“Each year, we attempt to provide snacks, drinks, board games, batteries and camping supplies for the campers,” Yoes said. “It is amazing how quick the kids go through their supplies while they are at camp. Also, it helps those who may not have the funds to purchase all of the camp supplies needed.

“These boys will be living outside of their comfort zone because we don’t allow them to bring cell phones, radios, televisions or any other portable or electronic device for six days straight.”

Applications must be filled out completely and accurately and every child accepted into the camp must take a physical before they can attend.
Anyone wanting to offer donations can contact Lt. Warren LeBeauf at (504) 559-9388.
