Seasoned actor returns to St. Charles

Norco native has performed in 50 plays, 12 TV shows, six movies

Carl Palmer’s name might ring a bell, but his face will definitely be familiar to fans of “The Sopranos,” “Law and Order” and almost 75 other television, film and theatre shows.

The Norco native has performed in more than 50 stage performances, 12 television shows and six movies in his career, including “The Pelican Brief” with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.

Now he has returned to southeast Louisiana where his love of acting took root.

With the film industry heating up and many production companies bringing their films to the state, Palmer said he is glad to be back and in the middle of the action.

“Louisiana is the No. 3 place in the country for production behind Los Angeles and New York – when I saw them shooting ‘Battle Los Angeles’ in Shreveport and Baton Rouge I knew things were changing,” Palmer said.

Palmer’s acting career began as early as 2nd grade when he performed in a play at Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Norco. He acted again in the 8th and 12th grades at St. Charles Borromeo School. The first movie he ever had a part in was a student film called “Harmony” directed and produced by some friends at Destrehan High School, but the acting “bug” did not really bite until college.

“I dug acting and all that but I was going to go to (Louisiana State University) and be a journalism major and be a sportscaster, then I switched to pre-law,” Palmer said. “My last semester at LSU, I got the last card for the last available undergraduate acting class. I took the class and that’s where the bug really bit.”

After graduation from LSU with a degree in history and political science, Palmer traveled to California where he studied at the California Institute of Arts, a school begun by Walt Disney and the alma mater wof industry greats such as Ed Harris and Tim Burton.

He later taught an Introduction to Acting class at the school, as well as The Dunn School in California and an Introduction to Speech class at LSU.

Now he has traveled all over the country with his craft. He has performed in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Milwaukee, Seattle, Santa Barbara, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and more.

This fall, he is also teaching an acting class the St. Charles Parish Community Education.
