Schools honor Week of the Young Child

Banners created by children from the east bank of St. Charles Parish went on display at the New Sarpy, St. Rose and Destrehan libraries in May to celebrate the Week of the Young Child.

And Boudreaux, the Zephyr’s mascot, mingled and posed for pictures during the week of activities at the Head Start Program in Destrehan.

Karen Hebert, early childhood educator for St. Charles Parish Public Schools, says the Week of the Young Child is an annual event that recognizes the needs of young children and the adults involved in their education and care.

“Parents, teachers and caregivers play an important role in the lives of young children,” Hebert said. “WYOC is the week of planned activities dedicated to celebrating their efforts.”

Hebert says the National Association of Young Children is an association that promotes excellence in early childhood education.

“The association has existed for 80 years and has approximately 100,000 members,” she said. “The primary focus of the organization is to provide educational and developmental services and all resources to parents and educators.”

Due to scheduling conflicts, the week’s activities were held during the early part of May, and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, along with local fire departments, participated in activities with the children.

“Many of the children expressed to their teachers that they wanted to become police officers or firemen,” Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said. “Therefore, we wanted to make certain that the kids understand the importance of getting an education so that they could become successful. Overall, the interaction with the children was a great experience for all.”

With the assistance of Harry Hurst students, each Head Start child created hats from newspapers, had Sock Puppet Day, and worked with volunteer fire fighters from St. Rose.

“We can show support for early learning in our community by promoting early literacy programs, thanking teachers who care for our children and working to ensure that our public policies support early learning for all young children,” Hebert said.

During the event, the children also learned the importance of education and how the professionals that attended use reading and writing in their occupations.
