Digital Media Team Members from the St. Charles Satellite Center recently went on a field experience to Nicholls State University in Thibodaux to tour the Office of Student Publications and Art and Mass Communication Departments.
Team members learned about Nicholls as a whole including majors and minors offered and admission requirements. Admissions Counselor and tour guide David Ford took them throughout the campus showing them the student publication area, the TV broadcasting and mass communication departments, the art department as well as student housing and recreational areas.
Team members visited the student publications department. One of the main focuses of this department is producing the University’s newspaper titled “Nicholls Worth.” Newspaper editors spoke to the team members about the on campus job of producing the paper every week. Students from all types of majors, ranging from graphic design to English and even psychology come together to work on the weekly paper.
After, they visited mass communications department consisting of TV broadcasting, radio broadcasting and print media. Professors took students on a tour of the broadcast studio. They went through multiple stage sets and control room used to record their TV shows. At the radio broadcasting students learned more about what goes on within a radio station and saw behind the scenes of KNSU 91.5, Nicholls’ very own radio station.
The final stop of the field experience was the arts department. The multiple art programs offered are graphic design, ceramics, painting, photography and more. They learned about the equipment and software programs used and the type of work that is done.
