River Region Drama Guild back in action after Hurricane Ida

Scenes from the movie Frozen were performed this past weekend by young actors at the River Region Drama Guild.

The River Region Drama Guild sold out both showings of its winter young actor’s workshop this past weekend – its first official show since Hurricane Ida destroyed the organization’s building and contents.

RRDG Vice President Steven Fontenot said the shows yielded lots of compliments and donations for the organization.

“We normally do a young actor’s winter workshop each year, but this has been the biggest show for our winter workshop that we’ve ever done,” Fontenot said of the Frozen show this month. “This year we decided to try something bigger and opened it up the public to come and view for the first time ever.”

He said cast members practiced for a total of 16 hours over the course of January, and that it was impressive to see what they were able to accomplish in that timeline.

“They did a phenomenal job,” he said. “We plan on opening up shows like this to the public as much as we can because of the need to raise funds. We’re the only non-profit theatre in St. Charles Parish, and we had to rebuild everything after Hurricane Ida. We only had enough to rebuild the building, and didn’t have enough insurance for all of the contents. We lost the sets, all lighting, all sound, all costumes, all props … we basically had to start over.”

Fontenot said opening shows to the public will help the guild to raise not only funds but also awareness of everything the organization provides and offers.

“Our goal is for everyone to have access to the arts. We want to make sure that we can continue to keep the cost down so that people in St. Charles Parish don’t have to pay higher costs” he said, explaining that the RRDG’s camps, workshops, and tickets are priced affordably so that more people can enjoy the offerings. “We also have scholarships available.”

Next up for RRDG is Godspell, which will run March 30-April 2.

“That show is already cast, and it’s the perfect show for Easter time … perfect for church groups and anyone who would enjoy the story of the last days of Jesus,” Fontenot said.

Tickets for the show can be purchased at rrdg.simpletix.com. Anyone interested in helping the RRDG via donations or sponsorships can visit rrpa.org.
