R.K. Smith Middle School teacher of the year

Malissa Gore was selected as the 2013-14 Teacher of the Year for R.K. Smith Middle School.

Gore began her career in Aurora, Colo. where she taught American History at Smoky Hill High School. She became a member of the R.K. Smith family in 2006 and is in her eighth year in St. Charles Parish.

Gore has worked with the eighth graders in their quest to learn more about history and has incorporated more reading and writing into the social studies curriculum to increase critical thinking skills that students will need long after they are done with school.

Gore is currently a co-athletic director at the school as well as serving as an assistant coach for football, boys basketball, baseball and boys track.  During her eight years at R.K. Smith Gore has had various head coach and assistant coach responsibilities with girls’ basketball and softball.She is a member of social studies study group, the chairperson of the social studies department and the Louisiana Middle School Association.

Gore has presented at Socratic circles at the 2013 LMSA Conference, Richard Elementary School in Acadia Parish, St. Charles Parish Fall reading and writing mini-conference and R.K. Smith.

In addition, she has presented a new framework for incorporating common core reading and writing standards through the literacy design collaborative to teachers at R.K. Smith Middle School and Hahnville High School.
