Vendor celebrates his 98th birthday at the German Coast Farmers’ Market

Robert Tranchant of Destrehan was joined by family and friends as he celebrated his 98th birthday.

If you were at the July 24 German Coast Farmers’ Market and heard “Happy Birthday” played several times over the speakers, it was for a very special reason: vendor Robert Tranchant of Destrehan was there selling plants to the community. He had also turned 98 just one day before.

Market Board of Directors President Ann Montgomery said she thought it was a joke when she found out how old he would be because of how active he is at the market.

“He sells pineapple plants, cactus, bedding plants and herbs. He is quite amazing,” Montgomery said. “Mr. Bob is a faithful vendor. He seems to appreciate and enjoy being out in the community and visiting with customers … sharing his knowledge and helping them get started in their gardening adventures. His customers just absolutely adore him.”

Montgomery said that after the July 24 market was over several other vendors gave Tranchant gifts from their own stands.

“He’s loved by his customers, fellow vendors and volunteers,” she said. “He’s really, really someone that adds something to the market. We had a cake that we sent him home with.”

Tranchant is a vendor at the east bank market, which is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Ormond Plantation, located at 13786 River Road in Destrehan.

There is also a west bank market that is held each Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the West Bank Bridge Park, located at 13825 River Road in Luling.
