Prayer and music event set for Saturday

Jaleesa Chapman said she is excited to see what God will do in her beloved community of St. Charles Parish.

Originally from New Sarpy, Chapman is now a St. Rose resident who is planning a Prayer, Praise and Worship Event on July 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the New Sarpy Basketball Court, located at 733 9th Street in New Sarpy.

“The event is open to the public and all ages,” Chapman said. “There will be live music, keynote speakers and a representative from the parish president’s office. It’s just about the community coming together with prayer to stop the violence. God just spoke to me … the violence, the crime has gotten way out of control. Now you can’t even pump gas without being nervous. We need to go back to our roots. God spoke to me and said gather the community and let’s pray.”

She added that there will be free refreshments at the event, as well as some chairs and bleachers set up. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chair.

This is the first event of this kind that Chapman has organized, but she said she will continue to plan prayer events around the parish as long as there is an interest from the community.

“You never know what one voice can do,” she said. “The feedback has been unbelievable. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback and donations from small businesses and community members. I’m just waiting to see what God has in store and what He’s going to do.”
