Parks and recreation department launches online resources for coaches

Background checks, Coach’s Resources and Feedback

The St. Charles Parish Parks and Recreation Department launched an online resource center called Coach’s Corner early this summer for all sports and recreation coaches.

The website includes various resources for anyone interested in coaching recreational sports in the parish.

“Coach’s Corner was a collaborative effort that was necessary. It is a program that allows the department to give volunteer coaches the resources and tools they need to help teach young athletes game fundamentals as well as character building,” said Parks and Recreation Director Duane Foret.“It also allowed the department to implement mandatory background screenings so that parents are confident that their children are being surrounded by coaches of high moral character.”

Before volunteering as a team coach, volunteers must go to the website and sign up to complete a mandatory background check.

The website also features game cancellation and news updates for all recreation games. There is a map of the West Bank Bridge Park, which allows coaches, parents and residents to see when and where games are being held around the parish.

Additionally, the website includes a sign-in portal that allows coaches to view the coaches code of ethics and volunteer eligibility.

Featured on the website, the Coaches Document Station includes the all star packet, coaches code of conduct and coaching application. There is also the coaches rules and recreation for each sport that is offered in St. Charles Parish.

“We are so fortunate to have a recreation department that offers more than 18 youth programs and the department taking the necessary steps to provide resources to volutneer coaches speaks volumes to the dedication the department has to our community, ” said Parish President Larry Cochran. “The background checks will allow the department to ensure that participants are not only safe, but that they are getting great quality coaches.”

The mission of St. Charles Parish government is to provide high quality, efficient services to sustain and enhance the quality of life for all residents of St. Charles Parish.
