Parish honors employee of the year

St. Charles Parish honored 93 employees for attendance and service during its 36th annual Civil Service Awards/Training Program held June 7 at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center.

Shelia Toney, the housing program supervisor for the St. Charles Parish Department of Community Services was named outstanding employee of the year.

Toney is a 36-year employee of St. Charles Parish government. She has served the entirety of her career in the Department of Community Services, where she started as community action outreach worker before becoming the parish’s housing program supervisor.

Parish Personnel Officer Dayna Parker said Toney truly defines the Employee of the Year award.

“When dealing with residents Shelia is always calm, compassionate and patiently assists them with acquiring the necessary documents in order to provide them with the support that they may need to move them out of their crisis,” said Parker in a speech during the awards ceremony. “As the director of community services says, “she puts the service into public service.”

A committee made up of appointed and civil service employees chose Toney from a field of nominees. This year’s committee included Michelle Higgins, Sean Lewis, Travis Ramos, Travis Cortez, Curtis Robinson, Angelique Davis-Zeno and Kim Perret.

In addition, St. Charles Parish Emergency Preparedness Director Joe Ganote gave a presentation on 2018 hurricane season predictions and preparations for parish employees.
