King and Queen George and Lonnine Adamietz
George and Lonnine Adamietz are excited about celebrating a special year for the Krewe of Lul, especially as its royalty.
Married 58 years, the couple had passed on the honor of serving as king and queen in earlier years, perfectly content with holding their yearly party with the event. But this year they were offered an opportunity to serve that was too special to let go – the parade’s 40th anniversary.
“With this being the 40th and we’re getting a little older so we decided to go ahead and do it,” Lonnine said.
It’s been exciting, a little nerve wracking, requires a lot of meetings and a lot to do, but she said they’re having a great time.
She also mused George “is in his glory with all this attention.” Lonnine has already had to correct him that he’s king of the parade, but not of the house.
While they’re royalty now, the Adamietz’s celebration with the parade goes back to its beginning.
“We have watched and enjoyed every Krewe of Lul parade (never missing one),” said Lonnine. “It didn’t matter if we stood in the rain or the cold, a good time was had by all. It is such an honor to be selected as king and queen for this 40th anniversary. We hope everyone has a wonderful time. I know we sure will enjoy it.”
They’re still reveling over the ball.
“The biggest surprise is how fantastic the ball was,” Lonnine said. “When I walked into the hall it looked like the municipal auditorium. It was absolutely beautiful. Everything was good. They sold 406 tickets, double the number anticipated. We’ve had so many calls telling us how nice the ball was.”
She recalled how unnerving the announcement of “Here comes the king and queen” was for her, but Lonnine said it didn’t take her but a minute to calm down and just enjoy the party. George was equally pleased.
“It’s outstanding,” he said. “People like you and you have a good time. It’s party time.”
Lonnine also considers the parade Luling’s claim to fame, stating its fame along with the Alligator Festival and the Battle for the Paddle.
As they have every year, the two have their parade celebration planned, too.
The couple have a son, David, and daughter, the late Telli Jo, along with two granddaughters and three grandchildren.
A native of Thibodaux, George moved to Luling in 1954. Lonnine was raised in Morgan City and moved to Paradis in 1955.
For the Adamietzs, it’s time to dress up and feel like royalty, as well as reflect on their own anniversary as a couple.
“We met at a Sunday afternoon dance at Red Gros in Paradis in 1957,” she said. “It didn’t take too long for us to know that we were going to spend our life together. We have been married 58 years and we are still in love and still best friends.”
