Kids get up-close look at lung damage

DESTREHAN – As part of a unit on body systems, students in Barry Guillot’s class at Harry Hurst Middle were able to get a close look at what smoke does to your lungs.

The pork lung was purchased by St. Charles Parish nurse coordinator Darla Rebowe with money from an “Educating young people on the dangers of second hand smoke” grant awarded from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

The lung has emphysema and cancer, and simulates what a human lung would look like after smoking a pack of cigarettes each day for 20 years.

Students discussed that it was not only the length of life when health is concerned, but the quality of life.

Harry Hurst Science Lab coordinator Dee Laumann presented the smoker’s lung to seventh grade HMS students.
