John Smith elected LSBA president

During its recent annual conference, the Louisiana School Boards Association members elected John Smith to lead the organization as president for 2012.

LSBA is a federation of the public school boards in Louisiana that works to be an active and effective educational organization in the state.

During his acceptance speech, Smith said that public education in the state of Louisiana and across the nation is being challenged like never before in history.

“LSBA must and will lead the struggle to counter destructive policies that threaten the future of our children,” Smith said. “It is our responsibility to ensure that every child has an opportunity to receive a high quality education.”

Smith has outlined the following goals to guide the work of the organization under his tenure as president:

• Expedite the Executive Director selection process;

• Ensure that LSBA manage its fiscal affairs in accordance with Government Accounting Standards and Practices;

• Conduct annual audit of the organization’s fiscal affairs to be reviewed and published for review by the membership;

• Ensure that board members have access to quality training opportunities that meet state certification standards;

• Increase the use of technology

• Increase and improve the quality of meetings of the Board of Directors and Subcommittees;

• Improve communication across the membership;

• Improve the Legislative Action process;

• Implement an Emergency Messaging System; and to

• Develop a LSBA brand and logo.

With over 47 years of experience in education and a lengthy tenure of more than 30 years on the St. Charles Parish School Board, Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.

“I look forward to working with my fellow board members, governmental agencies and the citizens of Louisiana to continue on the path of improving education for our children,” Smith said.
