The Hahnville Hi-Steppers Parents Club is raising funds to help pay for the dance team’s trip to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade this November.
The group is hosting a 25-family garage sale on Saturday, June 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m, at First Union Presbyterian Church located at 134 Lakewood Dr.
Items included in the sale are furniture, small appliances, clothing and shoes, books, and knicknacks. Be sure to mark your calendars and be ready for lots of bargains!
Another fundraising effort is a win/win for the dance team and the community. It’s a recycling effort that properly disposes of old electronics equipment such as cell phones, laser print ink cartridges, and digital cameras, while at the same time raises funds for the girls’ trip.
“In this fundraiser, there’s actually nothing to buy,” said Brett Cazenave, Hi-Steppers Parent Club fundraising coordinator. “We are simply asking the community to protect the environment by donating their used cell phones, inkjet cartridges, laptop computers, iPods, digital cameras and digital video cameras.”
According to the Consumer Electronics Association the average U.S. household owns 25 consumer electronics devices. With more than 150 million used cell phones stockpiled in U.S. households, this recycling fundraiser is easy and profitable.
The used electronics donated will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and sold. The recycling fundraiser pays up to $300 per item.
The Hi-Steppers will spend six days in New York in November, learning choreography from a professional choreographer and will perform with members of other dance teams in the annual parade on Thanksgiving Day.
To defray costs for this trip, the Parents Club is conducting a number of fundraisers this summer in addition to the garage sale and electronics recycling program, including a $5 per chance raffle for a pair of 2009 LSU football season tickets, car washes, and a parents’ night out.
“We want to give all the girls an opportunity to go to New York for this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Elray Boudreaux, president of the Parents Club. “All funds raised are going into a separate account just for this New York trip and we’re going to distribute it evenly to all the girls who attend.”
Dance team members have decorated collection boxes for the used electronics and they have been placed at local business and places of employment.

Dance team members will be selling raffle tickets as well as collecting used electronics at the sale.
