HHS students went to market

Calling it “a real eye opening experience” on how actually complicated it is to run a business, Hahnville High School senior Ty Fabre praised the school’s new Entrepreneurship-Micro Enterprise and Principles of Business class.Fabre also serves as the class’ COO of the class-run business.

The class is a new addition to HHS’ business curriculum to benefit students in the Jump Start pathway, as well as college-bound students interested in business and entrepreneurship.

Several students in teacher Vincent Normand’s class recently took a trip to Spahr’s Restaurant hosted by the restaurant’s Brent Roger. Those in Normand’s class have a mock, student-run business called “Tiger Paw Industries” and each plays a role in the company.

“This field trip was a true example of bringing the business world into our classrooms here at Hahnville High School,” Normand said.  “We are very fortunate to have such opportunities and to have the support from local businesses leaders in our community.”

They toured locations in both Thibodaux and Des Allemands, as well as had lunch at the Alumni Grill, another venture of the Spahr’s family. This experience gave them a hands-on look at local businesses and the chance to ask entrepreneurial questions since most of the students in the new Micro Enterprise/Entrepreneurship Class have expressed interest in owning their own business one day.

For Marcy Porche, an HHS junior and the class-run business’ public relations manager, the trip fit with her future plans.

“I enjoyed our opportunity to visit the various venues of Spahr’s since I have plans of owning and operating my own restaurant in the future,” Porche said.

HHS sophomore Jalen Stewart, who is also the class-run business’ human resources manager, called the trip an “adventurous way to learn about entrepreneurship.”
