Megan Elizabeth Gonzales was named the recipient of the 2010 Robert C. Menezes Sr. Memorial Community Scholarship Friday evening, May 21, at Hahnville High School’s graduation ceremony held in the John A. Alario Center in Westwego.
The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated leadership abilities, academic achievement, and contributions to the local community. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior selected by the school and is in memory of Bob Menezes, who was coach and later principal of Hahnville High School for 20 years until his death from cancer in 1975.
“It is quite rewarding to be able to present our scholarship to such a smart and gifted person,” said Doris Menezes, widow of the late principal and coach, who made the presentation of the award at Friday’s graduation ceremony. “Megan has worked extremely hard and has excelled in the classroom, in the arts, and in the community. Hahnville’s scholarship committee selected an outstanding student and we’re pleased to be able to contribute to her continuing education as she attends college.”
Megan Gonzales was recognized by the Times Picayune in its “Senior Salute” and as an “A+ Athlete by WWL and McDonalds. She received the Dow Scholastic Achievement Award, was on the Superintendent’s List for four years and participated in Louisiana Girls State. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, Science Olympiad, and the Spanish Honor Society. She served four years on the Student Council.
Gonzales participated in the Symphonic Band and Marching Band serving as Drum Major. She was a four-year clarinetist in the Parish and District Honor Bands, participated four years in both Talented Theatre and Talented Music and was a member of the Thespian Society and the Drama Club. She was a four-year letterman and captain of the Tennis Team. She participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served as its co-captain. She was a cast member in “Into the Woods” and “Beauty and the Beast” in the River Region Drama Guild and participated in Holy Family’s Youth Group, Music Ministry, participated in the Buddy Walk for Down’s Syndrome, and raised funds for the Relay for Life.
Megan is the daughter of Todd and Paula Gonzales of Luling. She plans to attend the University of Louisiana-Lafayette where she will pursue a degree in Graphic Design and Music.
