In her “school report card” for Hahnville High, principal Barbara Fuselier stressed how attendance affects students scores for better and for worse – and also the need for a solution to the dropout problem.
According to the report card, which covers the school year of 2005-06, Hahnville boasted a daily attendance rate of 93.6 percent, just under the state average of 93.7 percent.
The dropout rate was at 5.9 percent, a touch higher than the 5.2 percent statewide average. Attendance and dropout rates adversely affect a school’s so-called “SPS” – or “School Performance Score,” which show how well the school is performing based on test results, student attendance and dropout rates.
The total SPS dropped 7.1 points from the previous year, much of which can be attributed to declining attendance rates and increasing dropout rates, according to Fuselier.
“Declining indicators that negatively affected the 2005-06 SPS included attendance but mostly dropouts,” Fuselier said. “We have programs to work with students who need extra support. Still, the numbers of students who drop out continue to negatively affect our score.”
The state’s goal for all schools in Louisiana is an SPS of 120. Currently, Hahnville is at 99.9 after dropping from 107.0 the previous year.
