Widow’s home has broken windows, leaking roof
Employees from International Matex Tank Terminals in St. Rose will be donning gloves and tool belts this Friday to help out an ailing caretaker.
The plant employees will head to New Sarpy to help the disabled grandmother who is in her 60s and is trying her best to take care of her three grandchildren despite losing her husband earlier this year.
“It is wonderful what these people are doing for me and people like me,” the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said. “I appreciate everything that everyone is doing and I couldn’t have asked for better people.”
Her family was chosen based on greatest need and income level. IMTT reached out to the parish through Project with Purpose, a corporate volunteer program out of New Orleans.
“(IMTT) wanted to give back to their community… and they wanted to get their company employees involved in a project to give back,” said Daquari DeLeon, with Projects with Purpose. “This woman is on disability, her husband passed away and she takes care of her three grandchildren who are between the ages of 4 and 10 years old.
“She’s elderly and in poor health so she can’t move around a lot.”
DeLeon said that the IMTT employees have their work cut out for them on Friday. The main repairs that they will do to the property include replacing broken windows and a leaking ceiling, building safe steps for the entryway, painting, placing skirting along the bottom of the raised home, working on a storage unit outside and picking up items around the yard, such as broken toys.
“The primary concern on the home is breakages in the windows that allow water to leak in and bees and different insects and animals to get in,” DeLeon said.
DeLeon said that her program and IMTT teamed up with the St. Charles Parish Community Services Department to make the project possible.
“They were really key in helping us find her,” she said. One parish employee even donated a couch to the family.
Projects with Purpose and IMTT are hopeful that when the community notices the wonderful work being done in St. Charles Parish, they will be inspired to give back as well.
“I think it’s a wonderful project that helps people who can’t afford to fix their own homes,” the anonymous recipient said.
