Heather R. Breaux BLOG 7-25-2007

For most kids, now is the time to reflect on the carefree days of their summer vacation and treasure the time that is left before a new school year begins, but for most parents, planning for the year ahead has begun and shopping carts loaded down with school supplies and uniforms are lined up at stores around the parish. When I was a kid, the weeks leading up to a new school year where actually exciting for me and I loved to shop for new notebooks and other supplies.

I would accompany my mom on the shopping trip and when we would get home I would get everything we purchased organized and load up my school bag, ready to go for the first day of school.

School uniforms weren’t a requirement, so shopping for school clothes was probably the best part of the back-to-school experience.

Trying on different outfits and coordinating shoes and shirts was like my own personal fashion show and I absolutely had to pick out the perfect ensemble for my first day back at school.

I never really complained about going to school but I did fall victim to the first-day jitters.

I can remember feeling really nervous the night before the new school year began, worrying about whether or not I would like my teachers and if any of my friends would be in my classes.

I wouldn’t be able to sleep and eating breakfast the next morning just wasn’t going to happen.

I would have nightmares of missing the school bus or not being able to find my classroom, but I always made it through the first day without fail and made it home with good feelings about the year ahead.

It’s been eight years since I graduated from high school and two years since I completed college, and although I flourished the most in a classroom setting, I must say that I am glad my school days are a thing of the past.
