Groundhog, nutria predict early spring and summer

The national icon Punxsutawney Phil woke up on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2 and did not see his shadow, signifying that winter will soon end and spring will come early.

Similarly, New Iberia’s “Cajun groundhog” Pierre C. Shadeaux, who is actually a nutria, predicted that the spring will be short and summer will be on its way early by seeing his shadow that same winter morning.

The Daily Iberian sponsored the 14th annual event in which Louisianians gather to see Shadeaux wake up on Groundhog Day.
