Glynn Rhodes stays healthy, helps others along the way

In an intimate 10-person exercise session, Glynn Rhodes teaches his weekly Body Bootcamp class at the Fitness Club in Luling each Monday evening.

Complete with weights, step platforms and a plenitude of motivation, Rhodes instructs those daring enough to take his military-style training class on the ins and outs of personal fitness.

“I’m doing what I love,” said Rhodes. “I’ve always been an active person and I find satisfaction in helping others reach their personal fitness goals.”

Rhodes, 65, first began his healthful trek in 1980 when he trained for a 5K marathon.

“That road race was my first trip into the world of athletics,” he said. “And since then I’ve done it all. One routine has evolved into another over the years, and so on.”

With nearly three decades of training under his belt, Rhodes has managed to accomplish several notable feats – all due to his unique athleticism.

In the mid 1990s, the “super motivator” – as he is called by his friends and students – placed fifth in the world for his performance on the Concept2 rowing machine during one-hour and half-hour competitions.

During his cycling days, Rhodes competed and placed first within his age group for 100-mile bike events, and came out on top during bench pressing meets, lifting 290 pounds with a body weight of only 165 pounds.

“I have a lot of experience with exercise and that’s what I bring to my class each week,” he said. “It’s a combination of what I’ve learned and my goal is to keep my students motivated until the results begin to show and then continue on to the next level with them.”

Rhodes’ Body Bootcamp workout consists of a variety of routines, including military calisthenics, push ups, jumping jacks, cardio and functional moves that help work core muscle groups.

Each class normally ranges from 12 to 14 students, several of whom are recruited through the parish’s Community Education program.

“Everyone who takes the class is from here and we develop and over the weeks we become a ‘fitness family,’” said Rhodes. “Setting an example for others is crucial. If I can change one person’s life, it’s all worth it.

“I tell those who take my class that there are few things in life that you can control, but you can take hold of your diet and exercise regimen.”

Rhodes boasts that his class is intense, but points out that each person’s routine is individualized to meet their personal needs.

“I give very simple instructions, but offer a great workout for all fitness levels. We swing to the mirror or the door, not to the left or the right,” he said.

“People have changed their lifestyles by getting in shape. It builds confidence and really gives you a positive outlook on other things that are going on in your life – and it’s never too late to start.”

St. Charles Parish Public Schools Coordinator of Transportation, Gary Martin, says that he never misses a class and calls Rhodes “an inspiration to all.”

“He pushes me every time we workout together,” said Martin. “And he wants you to excel, he wants you to push past your personal best and succeed.

“Glynn gives 100 percent all the time, and what you see is what you get. He’s the best at what he does.”

Rhodes points out that while he aids others down their exercise paths, he also ensures that he continues to keep up with his own routine.

“Currently, I do Body Bootcamp once a week, and then I rotate from the treadmill and rowing machines to the free weights two to three times as week.”

The Fitness Club is located at 13117 Highway 90 in Boutte, near the St. Charles Bingo Hall.
