Fitness boot camp helps those willing to donate toys, coats

Former college coach, trainer of professional football players, wants to get parish’s kids and adults in shape

St. Charles Parish residents will have a new avenue to work off those holiday pounds with the opening of a fitness boot camp started by a former college coach who has worked with professional football players and junior Olympians.

And in December, the fitness camp will offer two week free trials to anyone willing to donate a toy to Toys for Tots or a coat to Bruce’s Coats for Kids.

Brad Taliancich, the director of Team Excelerate  Sports Club, opened FitFunCamp at the beginning of November and currently has two locations, one in Destrehan and another in Metairie. Taliancich has offered youth athletic development programs and training since 2003, but opened up the fitness boot camp in response to parents’ interest in trying some of the exercises used in the youth program.

“Parents asked if they could try some of the exercises and training equipment that we utilize in the youth training, and as a parent I thought it would be fun to incorporate that type of training into a fitness program for adults and make fitness fun again,” Taliancich said. “We offer both youth and adult programs at the Shriner’s Field on Ormond Boulevard and at Pontiff Playground in Metairie.”

Taliancich, who has coached track and field at Isidore Newman School, UNO and Nicholls State and has assisted with several agility training sessions for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, uses that experience when preparing challenging and successful workout activities.

“My past experiences as an AAU, middle, high school and college coach, coupled with being a former high school and collegiate track athlete, have helped me bring several vantage points to my work with athletes from ages four to 24,” Taliancich said. “I was not an exceptional athlete, but learned over time that if given a chance and proper instruction a person can become better at something they enjoy.”

Taliancich took that approach to the St. Charles Soccer Association, where he also currently offers a program for 6 to 11-year-olds several evenings per week.

“Our program is here to help children, not just athletes, develop physically, emotionally and socially,” he said. “Our program is a long-term solution to helping children develop movement skills, proper techniques and body mechanics that will help them not only now, but as they develop into young adults.”

Although each class is different, Taliancich says that everyone who attends will get a challenging, full-body workout. Classes include such activities as fitness games, relay races, partner/team competitions, shuttles and ladders. Specific exercises also include running and walking, body weight exercises like push-ups, dips and squats, balance and agility exercises and plyometrics.

“We also ‘play’ with fitness toys like medicine balls, resistance bands, ropes and sandbags,” Taliancich said.

Because the holidays can be rough on people trying to keep off or lose weight, Taliancich is now offering a 30-minute rapid fat loss boot camp. As part of the program, Taliancich has put together “The Ultimate Holiday Survival Kit: Simple training and nutrition tips to save your waistline this holiday season.”  It features the exact workout and nutrition e-books that Taliancich hands out to all of his boot camp clients during the holiday season. Plus, he  even provides a special audio recording of a holiday survival roundtable that was put together by some of the world’s best fat loss experts where literally every hot fitness topic was covered.

Taliancich is offering a seminar with the kit for free to any interested businesses, clubs or organizations.

“The holidays are a time of giving, and to be honest, a time of eating,” Taliancich said. “Our main focus is to provide quality programs to the community. This is our way of giving back and helping provide a source of fitness to the community.”

Some of Taliancich’s secret training and nutrition strategies covered at the seminar include the fact that you can exercise 20 to 30 minutes per day and lose weight.

“Get rid of the thoughts that you have to spend hours in a gym or on a treadmill,” he said. “Also, it’s important to eat immediately upon waking and then every two to four hours for a total of five meals or snacks a day.”

FitFunCamp will also offer a special two week free trial in December to anyone that donates an unwrapped toy to Toys for Tots or a coat to Bruce’s Coats for Kids. Taliancich says that anyone interested must contact him now to reserve their free slot as space will be limited.
