DHS drafting students help restore WWII boat

Member of the Destrehan High School basic and advanced drafting classes were invited by the National World War II Museum in New Orleans to take part in the restoration of the USS Sudden Jerk.

The students took a two-part field trip to the John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion where they took measurements of an existing electrical panel box on the boat in order to make a technical drawing. That drawing was then sent to a company to be used for creating a replica. The replica will go into the soon-to-be-exhibited boat.

Students needed to modify the design of the original electrical box.

Originally built in New Orleans by Higgins Industries, the “Jerk” was a PT-305 Patrol Torpedo Boat. It was used in the Mediterranean Sea during World War II.

Students were also treated to a tour of the museum’s other exhibits.
