Girl Scouts Louisiana East held their annual Gold Award reception and pinning ceremony on June 1 at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge, where Savanna Barbee and Kate Induni of Des Allemands were among the 10 Girl Scout recipients in the council’s 23 parishes who earned this award for 2010-2011.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador can earn and is received by only a few select Girl Scouts nationwide.
Barbee and Induni worked together to plan and facilitate the annual River Parishes Girl Scout Day Camp. With a theme of “Girls Go Green,” they planned fun activities that included daily interactive programs on ways to improve their environment by recycling, reusing, garden to live a healthier lifestyle and sharing what they learned with others.
“I learned that I am really good with children and that I enjoy teaching them,” said Induni. Barbee added, “This experience has given me the confidence to follow my dreams.”
An 11-year Girl Scout who enjoys traveling and scuba diving, Induni will be a senior at Hahnville High School this fall where she is active in Student Council, Beta Club, National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society and Science Olympiad. Upon graduation next year, she plans to attend Southeast Louisiana University to major in Education, and aspires to teach young children with developmental challenges. She is the daughter of Celeste P. Chiasson.
During her 11 years as a Girl Scout, Barbee also earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award and Silver Award. She is a 2011 graduate of Hahnville High School, currently studying mass communications and sports management at Louisiana State University. She is the daughter of Jan Barbee.
