Deputy returns home after shooting

Cpl. Burt Hazeltine out of the hospital.

Cpl. Burt Hazeltine of the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office returned home from University Hospital in New Orleans this evening.

Hazeltine was shot several times while directing traffic in a Paradis school zone shortly before 9 a.m. on April 16. He spent six days in the hospital and underwent exploratory surgery. He suffered a perforated lung and loss of sight in his right eye.

Family, friends and fellow officers turned Cpl. Hazeltine’s Des Allemands neighborhood into a full fledged welcome home celebration as he returned to his family in a chauffeured SUV led by a 25 police motorcycle escort.

Fire trucks lined the streets with their lights flashing, and neighbors emptied their houses to shake Hazeltine’s hand and kiss him on the cheek.

Hazeltine’s mother, Christine, was the first in line when he pulled up.

The deputies from the Sheriff’s Office lined up down the driveway and into the street to welcome their brother officer home.

Capt. Pat Yoes of the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office, with a huge smile on his face summed up the moment with four small words.

” It’s a good day,” he said.
