Classmates, teachers thank Hurst student for fall break

Students and teachers in St. Charles Parish can thank Hurst Middle School student Braden Naquin for the week they will have off at the end of October.

Braden was one of only two students on a committee last year to come up with the school calendar.

He was asked to come up with ideas to make the school year more enjoyable and productive for his fellow students.

He suggested that a fall break be included in the calendar to give his peers a chance to relax on the long, holiday-free stretch between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

“People just need a break,” he said.

The committee jumped on the idea and this year Oct. 29 through Nov. 1 will be the parish’s first fall break.

Braden said his friends and classmates thanked him and were very excited to get the time off.

Braden volunteered for the committee after being approached by his principal, Margaret Flair.

Shelly and Adrian Naquin, Braden’s parents, were very proud of him for coming up with the idea. Shelly was especially proud because she is a teacher and will also get to enjoy the much-needed break.

“By October, kids are done and need a break,” Shelly said. “We see a discipline rise every year around that time because they need a break.

“Whoever they picked for this year’s committee will have big shoes to fill – how are they going to top this?”

Braden, his parents, his sisters, Jenae, 11, and Riley, 7, and baby brother, Copper, 20 months, plan to go camping at Silver Creek in Mt. Hermon, La. on their week off.
