Celebrate Mardi Gras with handmade traditional umbrellas

Umbrellas have been intertwined with the history of Mardi Gras and Second Lining, and now a local woman is helping to bring the tradition to locals.

St. Charles native Kristen Catalano taught herself to make handmade Mardi Gras and Second Lining umbrellas to help her mother decorate for a dog show. Now she owns NOLA Umbrellas and makes them in bridal, sports and custom themes.

The tradition of carrying umbrellas started out as a way to protect people from the sun and heat of Louisiana, but quickly transformed into a cultural icon.

Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs used the umbrellas in their first parades and decorated them ornately.

Catalano can be reached at kiwishiba@gmail.com or (504)237-0890 for custom orders. She also has a NOLA Umbrellas fan page on www.Facebook.com.
