Boy Scouts is more than just going outdoors, it’s about building character

Continuing the Boy Scouts mission in St. Charles Parish, the Southeast Louisiana Council is helping keep youths focused on doing the right thing in life.

“A lot of people think we’re about outdoors and fishing, but these are just vehicles for the values we’re talking about,” said Ernesto Carballo Jr., Scout executive and CEO with Boys Scouts of America Southeast Louisiana Council. “If you’re going to join an organization that will change a young person’s life for the better, ours does it.”

Southeast Louisiana Council represents 11 parishes, including St. Charles, in Louisiana.

Its main programs are Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. It serves more than 200 children in St. Charles Parish.

“Thanks to United Way of St. Charles, we’re able to make that a reality,” he said.

The Scouts’ core mission is to instill values in young men to make ethical decisions in life, Carballo said.

Statistics show young men involved in Scouts and sports of some kind are more likely to do good things like graduate from high school, go community projects, be more optimistic and are more likely to stay out of trouble, he said.

“All those outcomes are exactly what we’re trying to strive for,” Carballo said. “And every one of our 11 parishes strives to have this.”
