Book Review: ‘My Sister’s Keeper’

Reviewed by Elise deBruler

“My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult portrays a family’s struggle and the fight against cancer.

The story begins with Anna, who was only conceived as a genetic match for her sister Kate, now sick of her role as a donor, and she seeks a lawyer to gain medical emancipation from her parents.

Anna Fitzgerald is not the sister who has cancer, but she might as well have been, for she has spent numerous nights in the hospital for her sister Kate, who was diagnosed with leukemia at age two.

Now at age 16, Kate needs a kidney from  Anna. With all the complications and risks kidney surgeries have, Anna decides to put her foot down and get an attorney.

In the long journey of decision-making, the family sails through unexpected ups and downs to conclude with a surprising result.

“My Sister’s Keeper” was extremely inspirational and I could not put it down.

This novel is for mature readers, and I would highly recommend it.
