The “Darkwar” trilogy by Glen Cook is about a race of humanoid canine-like creatures called the Meth. The protagonist, a young child, or pup, within their world who rises up to power due to a series of unfortunate events, discovers her unique talents and abilities while her home is being destroyed by vicious marauders.
The first novel in the trilogy is called “Doomstalker,” and it begins to introduce Marika, the world Marika resides in and how the world is governed. It also introduces important characters’ backgrounds and lives. Her homeland has been by overrun by what they call the nomads, and she soon gains psychic powers and is adopted by a group of witches who have similar powers, but are called Silth. It becomes clear early in the novel that Marika’s world is mostly barren. Nothing comes easy and life is a constant struggle.
“Darkwar” is one of the best works of fiction I have ever read and Glen Cook is one the best fiction writers. The book is only one of the many great books that Glen Cook has written and I look forward to reading more of his books. I would rate this book as a must-read for anyone who is even slightly interested in fiction.
