For the first time, Des Allemands residents can sit down to a book entirely dedicated to the history of their favorite town.
Roy Lunk, lifetime resident of Des Allemands, published “Des Allemands: A Bayou Runs Through It” last year after a seven-year writing process lead to the 225-page book.
The book outlines three generations of Des Allemands history, from hurricanes and the lumber industry to Native Americans and invasive species of plants and animals.
Lunk began by writing down memories to share with his grandchildren seven years ago.
“I was going to make a small historical pamphlet, but it ended up as this book,” he said.
He researched the area’s history for years at the parish courthouse, libraries and through interviews with 29 parish seniors. He even spoke with a regional archeologist and an expert on the Chitimacha Native American tribe, which was originally located in Des Allemands.
“I had to do quite a bit of research,” Lunk said. “There really wasn’t anything on Des Allemands history before…there was nothing there for me to start with.”
In addition to a wealth of information, the book includes current and historical pictures from the area.
Lunk chose to self-publish the book to keep the cost down for readers.
“I wanted to get it out at a price they could afford…and I know they can afford it because they’ve been buying it up,” Lunk said, laughing.
Lunk also wanted to make sure that he could donate $2 from each book’s sale to St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church since he said the institution gives so much to the Des Allemands community.
Residents can get a copy of the book at Lunk’s first book signing. It will take place at the Paradis Library on March 10 at 11 a.m. Attendees will also have the chance to hear Lunk discuss his research.
The book, which costs $12, is currently sold at Frank’s Super Market, Allen’s Ace Hardware and Lesia’s Beauty Shop (all in Des Allemands) and Tiger Town Gifts in Luling.
