A Winter Wonderland

Mother Nature is dropping hints that the coldest months of winter are just ahead with a cool day here or there, but stop by the German Coast Farmer’s Market and you’ll be sure to walk in a “Winter Wonderland.”

Market organizers say that farmers and their seasonal veggies and sweet and juicy citrus fruits are lining the table tops at both the east and west bank farmer’s markets – and consumers are coming in droves to purchase the plentiful produce.

“My kids and I love to whip up a homemade vegetable soup this time of year, so that’s why I come to the market – to get the freshest produce in town,” said Mildred Hopkins of Norco.

And in addition to soup-friendly veggies like carrots and celery, the market is currently carrying a cornucopia delicious vegetables.

Here’s a few: mustard greens, cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, radishes, turnips, cabbage, sweet potatoes, parsley, green onion, mushrooms, carrots, beets, shallots and citrus fruits like satsumas.

But that’s not all you can find. The German Coast Farmer’s Market also carries gifts, wines, jellies, desserts and other unique items like pickled okra and pre-made gift baskets.

The market it open Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 13969 River Road in Luling and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.
