Fifty residents took part in the first annual 9.11K Run-Walk-Bike, which was to remember those that tragically lost their lives nine years ago while also raising food and money for the needy.
Mary Anne Schindler came up with the idea for the race/fundraiser after hearing from her son in Afghanistan, who had taken part in a similar race at his base.
“He kept on telling me that this was something I should start over here,” Schindler, a Destrehan native, said. “Everyone I talked to was really interested in doing it.”
Though Schindler only had a week to plan the event, 50 residents showed up. Two full grocery baskets of food, along with $130 was also collected.
“9/11 is something we can’t forget,” Schindler, who plans on doing the event every year, said.
Participants began at the St. Charles United Methodist Church, traveled to the Destrehan Plantation, and made their way back to the church.
