Around 400 riders will grace 25 floats when the Krewe of Lul rolls through the streets of Luling on Saturday.
The parade is scheduled to begin at noon on March 1 and will take its traditional route through Old Luling. The parade begins at the Winnwood Shopping Center, turns right onto Paul Maillard Road and travels through River Road, Sugarhouse Road and Angus Drive before disbanding on Paul Maillard Road.
The annual parade got back on track last year after inclement weather forced cancellations in 2011 and 2012. Before those two cancelled parades, the Krewe of Lul had rolled for more than three decades without a hitch.
The weather should be nice on Saturday, with a high of 75 and only a 10 percent chance of rain.
Most of the bands and dance troupes that marched in the parade last year will return this year, including the Hahnville High School band. They will be joined by festival queens from around the area, several fire trucks and a horse riding group, who will all toss beads into the crowd.
The parade will include around 65 different units.
Vial said that a few new floats have joined this year and some older krewes have reorganized. The individual groups create their own float themes, which are kept under wraps until they roll through town.
This year, O.J. Legendre and his wife, Opal, will serve as the king and queen. Vial said the two rode in the very first Krewe of Lul parade with their children.
“It really means a lot to them. They said they were totally blown away that we chose them for king and queen,” Vial said.
The Legendres will toss special commemorative scrolls to the crowd, which were designed by their son, Ted.
Vial said that illustrates how families have become an integral element in the annual parade.
Yvonne “Choote” Champagne will serve as the grand marshal.Other groups taking part in the parade include the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, EMS trucks from the local fire departments and St. Charles Parish Hospital. The hospital’s peanut butter truck will collect peanut butter and donations along the route, which will be donated to the St. Charles Social Concerns Food Bank.
