Around 400 riders will travel on 20 floats when the Krewe of Lul rolls through the streets of Luling on Saturday. The individual groups create their own float themes, which are kept under wraps until they parade through town.
The parade is scheduled to begin at noon on Feb. 14 and will take its traditional route through Old Luling. The parade starts at the Winnwood Shopping Center, turns right onto Paul Maillard Road and travels through River Road, Sugarhouse Road and Angus Drive before disbanding on Paul Maillard Road.
“It’s a day of fun and merriment,” Debbie Vial, Krewe of Lul spokeswoman, said. “Everybody gets to see a lot of family members and visit with friends. The route travels through business and residential areas, so you get a good mix of people along the route enjoying the day.”
Vial added that less crowded areas to view the parade include Monsanto Park and the area surrounding Luling Elementary School.
Most of the bands and dance troupes that marched in the parade last year will return this year, including the Hahnville High School band. They will be joined by festival queens from around the area, several fire trucks and 10 dance groups. The peanut butter float will also collect peanut butter to feed the hungry.
The parade will include around 65 different units.
This year, Robert Dupont and his wife, Nora, will reign as the king and queen. Vial said that the two will toss their traditional scrolls into the crowd. Hurschel Burleigh will serve as the grand marshal.
Inclement weather forced the parade’s cancellation in 2011 and 2012, but as of press time sunny skies are predicted for Saturday’s parade.
