Parks and recreation department debuts girls flag football program

This summer, the touchdowns, interceptions and flag pulls aren’t just for the boys.

The parish’s department of parks and recreation will debut its girls flag football program, which will run from July through August alongside the boys’ flag football program.

The inaugural season will feature four divisions, with 5 and 6-year-olds, 7 and 8-year-olds, 9 and 10 year-olds, and 11 and 13-year-olds each in their own division. The department hopes to have three to four teams in each division.

Registration will be open from May 1 through May 25, and all registrations must occur with the individual participant’s affiliated booster club. Late registration will take place with an additional fee from May 26 through May 31.

Grayson Touchard, a spokesperson for the parks and recreation department, said girls’ flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Louisiana High School Athletic Association will officially sanction the sport next school year.

She said parents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Girls’ flag football is on track to be offered at both the middle and high school levels in the near future,” she said. “The [department] is excited to bring this new program to life and looks forward to watching it grow into a staple of youth sports in the community.”

Duane Foret, director of the parks and recreation department, said in a press release that the introduction of girls’ flag football marks a significant advancement in the parish’s youth sports programming.

“It opens the door for girls to grow, lead, and thrive in a supportive and empowering environment,” he said.
