Council announces April’s senior events

The St. Charles Council on Aging has released its April calendar, which includes events open to St. Charles Parish seniors 60 years and older. This month’s highlighted events include the COA Spring Dance, a hurricane conference seminar and the annual senior olympic games.

The complete monthly list of April activities includes:

•Bidding 500 Card Club – This card club meets every Monday at the Hahnville Center with a beginners workshop from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and avid team play from noon to 3 p.m. Call 985-783-6683 for transportation.

COA Fun Day – Fun activities the fourth Friday of each month. This month a Spring Dance will be held on April 24 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hahnville Activity Center. Event features music, refreshments, door prizes and dancing. Space is limited. Call 985-783-6683 for reservations.

•Senior Hurricane Conference – The COA and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program will sponsor a Senior Hurricane Conference on Thursday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the VFW Hall on Angus Drive in Luling. Presentations and information will be available for all seniors. Breakfast and a light lunch will be served. Call 985-783-6683 to reserve transportation.

•Senior Olympic Games – The annual Senior Olympics will take place this month. Here’s a breakdown of events:

– On Thursday, April 16 the horseshoe event is set for 8:30 a.m., followed by table tennis and basketball free throw at noon.

– Bowling doubles will take place on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18 at the Creole Lanes in Houma at 8:30 a.m., followed by mixed doubles at noon. Singles play is also set for 8:30 a.m. on April 18.

– The celebration banquet and arts and crafts event is set for Wednesday, April 29 at the Houma Municipal Auditorium at 9:30 a.m.

•Scrap Booking and Calligraphy Art with Anne Hymel – This group meets every Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the New Sarpy Activity Center. Call Lois at 985-764-2412 for more information.

•Travel Club – The club is accepting applications for its May travel club which is a “Mystery Trip” and lunch on May 13.

•Exercise Classes – The COA sponsors exercise classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fitness Club located at 13117 Highway 90 in Boutte. The program centers around Body Flow exercise.

Literary Circle of Friends – This group meets every Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 145 Angus Dr. in Luling. Call Sharyn at 985-785-1981 for lunch reservations and transportation. Here are the March meeting details: March 6 – word games, March 13 – Scrabble contest, March 20 – Group story incorporating three key words, – March 27 – Easter Egg Word Hunt game and dying eggs.

•Computer Club – This group meets the third Tuesday of each month at the COA conference room. Next meeting is set for April 21 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Visit them online at www.home.bellsouth.net/p/pwp-computerclub.

•COA Cafe’ – Food, friends and fun the fourth Wednesday of every month. Next meeting is set for April 22 at the Bamboo Garden Restaurant located at 13491 Highway 90 in Boutte. Cafe is by reservation only, call 985-783-6683. The group will also begin taking application for its May 27 meeting at Z-Spot Sports Cafe in Paradis.

•Luling Center Coffee Social – The first Monday of the month from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
