Dispose of cooking oil, grease in garbage
The St. Charles Parish Wastewater Department is urging residents to dispose of kitchen oil and grease through regular trash pickup.

The substances, when disposed of down the drain, accumulate in the sewer system and can plug up lines, according to Wastewater Project Coordinator L.J. Brady. The grease cakes onto the sides of floats that control pump operations at lift stations and can corrode the equipment, causing the lift station to malfunction.

Please keep in mind that anything that empties into a drain in your household enters the sewer system, which parish employees and equipment have to deal with eventually down the line. Non-organic substances such as food wrappers and feminine products can also clog sewer lines. These issues can cause backups for neighboring residents as well.

For more information about what can and cannot be safely flushed or sent down the drain, contact Wastewater at (985) 783-5100.
