As our weather continues to cool off, community events in
St. Charles Parish have been heating up. With all the fairs and festivals going on, including the Destrehan and River Parishes Fall Festivals on the East Bank, residents from around the region are coming to St. Charles Parish. Let’s make sure we welcome these folks as we have a great time with our neighbors.
VETERANS DAY
LUNCHEON 2008
Parish President V.J. St. Pierre Jr. hosted his own fall event Nov. 10 with the first-ever St. Charles Parish Veterans Day Luncheon, held at the St. Rose American Legion Hall.
Over 300 veterans and their guests filled the hall for a patriotic multi-media program, including songs for each branch of the military and performances by familiar faces such as “Red Skelton” and “Elvis Presley.”
Ted Davis of Norco proudly showed off three bronze stars he earned during WWII. Guest speaker Maj. Gen. “Hunt” Downer gave an emotional speech about the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance.
River Birch Landfill sponsored the event. St. Charles Parish appointed staff members helped set up the event and serve veterans.

LITTER CONCERNS AFTER FOOTBALL GAMES
The St. Charles Parish Public Works Department spent days after the recent HHS vs. DHS football game cleaning up litter in Destrehan.
Officials think the litter is confetti used to cover cars and houses in the run-up to the game.
While school rivalries run deep, this type of celebration can clog drainage in the area. It also takes up the valuable time of Public Works crews tasked with cleaning up the eyesore who are needed on critical infrastructure projects.
Parish officials are asking that students keep these concerns in mind for next years games.

The St. Charles Parish Government Access Channel, Cox Cable Channel 6, will also begin airing the latest committee meetings four times per week. The schedule is as follows: Mondays at 10 a.m.; Wednesdays at 7 p.m.; Saturdays at 5 p.m.; and Sundays at 10 a.m. Meetings will air until a new committee meeting is scheduled.
SHOOTING STARS
BASKETBALL
Wednesdays through Dec. 10 at 6 p.m., residents are encouraged to support Shooting Stars Basketball at the Harry Hurst Gym in Destrehan.
The program follows the spring implementation of the Challenger Baseball program for children with disabilities, which boasted high participation and interest.
The Shooting Stars Basketball program is another example of the parish administration’s efforts to develop a comprehensive parks and recreation program that provides an array of services for all citizens.
Games are flexible and tailored to the players individual abilities. Teams are organized according to player abilities rather than ages. Each player is paired with a “buddy” to encourage and assist them on the court as needed.
